Shawn here, Blink-182 fan since the 20th Century. I wanted to know how much guitar lessons cost? I am a beginner and im just looking for some middle of the road lessons that could get me going to becoming a good guitar player. I do play the electric, and would like to play mainly alternative, pop punk, and punk rock.
What good lessons are there? Should i get them online? how much do they cost?
They cost about $20 an hour here on the West Coast.
I really suggest looking at guitar tabs and then looking on youtube for covers made my other guitarists. It’s your best bet and it’s boatloads cheaper.
to learn, did you teach yourself or did you pay for lessons (or get lessons from friends)?
im currently learning guitar by teaching myself.
i am also learning to read music.
you dont need a teacher for that! it really isnt that hard to figure out.
Well tbh, most famous guitar players are self taught and in my opinion teaching yourself is a better method since you benefit from much more creativity. Taking lessons may be faster but it puts your guitar playing down one road, there is no chance to really use your own style or improvisation much.
Eric clapton, who is considered a guitar god, still doesnt know how to read sheet music. Still an amazing guitar player isnt he?

I have this guitar and I used to pay for lessons, but my teacher never taught me anything new. I have some basic background knowledge on how to play. Does anyone know good sources such as books that I could buy to teach myself. I have plenty of time to practice if theres a book for newbies like me. Thanks!
check out this website. just look up a song you want to play and it will give you tabs. if you are not familiar with tabs, google it. there are also chords which give you the music notes such as EM, GM, G7, etc.

What is considered one of the best site for online guitar lessons? I want to be able to slow section of the song down so I can follow. I want to learn electric blues and really like the quality of ‘Play Rock Guitar’ with Keith Wyatt. Is there an online version of this type of lessons?
The one I personally like is www.ultimateguitar.com. There’s lessons, tabs, anything you can think of on this site.
He is almost done the medium level of both Guitar Hero I & II. He plays songs he has never even heard before (during the encores) at an average of about 90%. I already know that he is gifted (he was reading at 2yrs). Wondering if there are any real transferable skills in the game.
Any ideas concerning this are welcome. Thanks in advance. Faith
Playing an actual guitar and playing Guitar Hero are two entirely different things.
When you’re playing Guitar Hero, you’re just pressing buttons…there is NOTHING musical about that, despite the hype that you get to "play guitar".
When you actually play a real guitar, you have to strum strings and place your fingers on frets to produce the right notes.
There are not any skills from Guitar Hero that you can apply to playing an acoustic guitar besides possibly positioning of the instrument, and I’m very doubtful about that.
HOWEVER
Some of the best musicians started playing instruments at early ages. For example, my orchestra director started playing violin when she was 6 years old. She also learned guitar at an early age. Now, she has a doctorate degree in music, and she directs orchestra AND a guitar class at my school. She’s even been first chair violin quite a few times; got to see her in concert this weekend, and she was absolutely amazing.
I think that it would be a great idea to introduce the idea of playing an instrument to your son now. Don’t force him to though…being forced to do anything just makes someone not want to do that thing and stick with it.
I would mention more instruments than just guitar though; there are a LOT of instruments out there to play in addition to guitar, such as violin, piano, flute, trumpet, etc…
I would recommend putting more emphasis on violin or guitar the most since both instruments come in a variety of sizes, meaning that you could get an instrument that is a comfortable size for your son to use, but you could also sell it back to a music store for a larger one when he gets older.
Just don’t get an instrument that’s too cheap though; otherwise it will fall apart very soon afterwards, and you will spend more money than the instrument is worth to make repairs. Plus, playing on an instrument that’s always coming out of tune isn’t very fun.
I’m not quite sure about the minimum price for a decent guitar, but for a good violin, I wouldn’t buy anything under $250(excluding sale prices and taxes).
The best thing to do would be to find a teacher for whatever instrument your son decides to play, and then ask the teacher to go with you to look at an instrument.
You could also rent the instrument until you are sure that you want to purchase an instrument.
Some music stores even have rent-to-own programs where the money you use to rent the instrument goes towards buying the instrument.
Definitely bring up the idea of playing a musical instrument; playing an instrument is definitely a long-term skill that a person can use throughout their whole life. Even if he decides not to make a living in the performing arts industry when he grows up, instruments provide a way to be creative, express yourself, and relieve stress.
Hope this helps you!
