Should i attend guitar lessons (jazz) if i like metal?

Posted by admin on January 6th, 2010 and filed under lead guitar lessons | 4 Comments »

There’s only one school in the whole city but they only teach jazz, and i wanna be a Heavy Metal lead guitarist. Should i go for jazz?
I would prefer blues because i know there isn’t a metal school but..They don’t have blues, only jazz!

    yes you should
i play 19 instruments but the guitar is my primary…
i play metal sometimes and i use a whole crapload of jazz scales while i do it..
i know that you wont really like it but just stick it out go to the lessons and learn the scales and chords and i promise you that you will be thankful that you did..
it really helped me alot knowing all of the jazz riffs and stuff

What’s the difference between rhythm and lead guitar?

Posted by admin on January 2nd, 2010 and filed under lead guitar lessons | 7 Comments »

Ok…so here’s the thing. I’m really interested in learning how to play guitar. I love music and I’m not completley dumb about it, however it’s one of those questions that I should already know the answer to, but I don’t! And another thing is…there are alot of lead singers that also play guitars in their bands, which one are they playing? Lead or rhythm?

One last thing, i need some suggestions on what would be a good guitar that’s fairly cheap to learn on, and what’s the best way to learn? Actual lessons from someone or independently?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks.
oh and by the way i’m not sure if this is pertinent info or not…but i am a girl. i’m 5′1" and weigh just a lil over 100 lbs. not sure if guitars come in diff. sizes or not is why i was adding this lil piece of info.
so far….dalton and hawk have given me the best advice! =)
    thanks guys. i appreciate it.

The difference between rhythm and lead guitar is that rhythm plays the chords and follows a very steady sequence throughout the song, whereas the lead plays the solos, riffs or melody lines, as well as ‘dancing’ around the rythm guitar part to support it.

A good beginner guitar would be a low end Ibanez or a Squier Stratocaster.

    Hope this helps :)

should i get guitar lessons or not?

Posted by admin on December 28th, 2009 and filed under lead guitar lessons | 5 Comments »

i am 15 and have been playing guitar for almost 11 months and im pretty good. i just bought a new guitar and amp and i am playing lead in a band. i can play really fast solos and i know a lot of techniques like
    -tapping
    -hammer ons & pull offs
    -tremolo picking
    -pinch harmonics
    and lots more

i dont know like all the penetonic scales, and how to play in a certain key. i feel that sometimes im like illiterate when it comes to guitarr knowledge. do you think i should get lessons, if so, hhat should i learn from it.

lessons are a lot of money. and judging by your knowledge of guitar techniques so far i wouldn’t advise you to waste your money. you can watch free lessons on youtube, many of them are very good and i’m pretty sure most of them teach pentatonic scales and the likes. you could buy a book in any instrument shop or in good bookshops or even the library which goes through scales. your right to feel illiterate now but when you really learn the scales and what keys to play in your ability to write your own songs will increase so much.
also check out gibson.com. they have arlon roth specially giving lessons and i think he goes through scales. i wouldn’t be too sure but have a look if ya like.

    hope i helped :)

How can I best use online guitar lessons (justinguitar.com) concurrently with in person guitar lessons?

Posted by admin on December 25th, 2009 and filed under lead guitar lessons | 2 Comments »

I’ve had a Fender Stratocaster for a while and I’m finally going to take this summer to try and learn to play it since I won’t be working. When I tried before to learn via justinguitar.com and various YouTube videos (I’m monetarily challenged), even when I was dedicating my time to it, I never got that feeling in my mind that said "OK, I’m heading in the right direction, with enough time and dedication, I’ll be playing well in the future". Without that sense of confidence in your direction, it’s just really tough to be highly motivated. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m probably going to need a teacher for a while to lead me in the right direction and solidify my learning habits but, like I said, I’m pretty broke.

Looking on Craigslist, I can get a proven guitar teacher, 4 weekly one hour lessons, for $95. I want to get the best bang for my buck while minimizing my amount of lessons.

For my particular situation, what tips would you give me? How many lessons should I take? I know a lot of people would suggest "try playing songs you like" but I’m such a noob to this stuff that I really wouldn’t know where to start. If you can’t give me specific tips, how did you learn?

PS. Bands I really enjoy and want to see myself emulating in the future are The Strokes, Bloc Party, Foals, Interpol, and Led Zeppelin, if that’s of any help.

PSS. I know someone in here is going to tell me to learn via chords, power chords, scales, etc.,. but it’s all gibberish to me. If anyone would like to enlighten me, I’d be very, very thankful.

Talk to your instructor, he should evaluate your skills, and have you work on areas where you are lacking.

Your best bang for your buck in guitar lessons is to take a class at your local community college or adult school. Classes are usually very cheap, sometimes even free.

The best method using Justin guitar, is to take the lessons for beginners in order, and follow his recommended practice schedules.

    Help with Rhythm Guitar..??

Posted by admin on December 22nd, 2009 and filed under lead guitar lessons | 4 Comments »

What do i need to know, or learn to be able to play rhythm guitar? im taking guitar lessons, but im learning more lead guitar, so i also want to teach myself rhythm. i want to know how to play rhythm guitar because i want to start a band, and play rhythm until i learn lead, i am 13

Learn tons of chords. Work on rhythm and timing. Get a metronome and play with some drummers and bassists. Listen to some of your favorite songs and try to play along with them. Try listening to Malcolm Young’s rhythm playing in AC/DC. Also give the Ramones a listen. Johnny Ramone is a great guitar play and he rarely ever played a guitar solo.

As a mediocre guitar player, where could I find online lessons?

Posted by admin on December 19th, 2009 and filed under lead guitar lessons | 3 Comments »

I’m a mediocre player, I can play quite a few chords, including barred ones, can do basic fingerpicking, and easy lead parts (e.g. The Cure). Absolutely cannot shread or any of that.
    *
I want to work my way up to being a skilled lead player. Can anyone recommend free online sites with good lessons?

Just keep at it. Read guitar books, listen to your cds and try and try to figure out the songs, tune by ear, don’t use tabs! Ears are very important.

www.vanderbilly.com is an awesome website with videos and a guitar forum. I’m a member. It’s awesome.
