I never had a lesson in my life, and Ive been playing for about 8 years now. A lot of guitarists are self taught. The best way is to just listen to music and try to play along. You’ll need to know a few basic chords to get started this way. Failing that you can do what I did and go to www.911tabs.com and there you will find thousands of guitar sheet music to all of your favorite songs. Also go out and get yourself a few guitar magazines, they have tabs you can learn from and an extensive legend section in every issue explaining how to read them. They also come with cds and some with backing tracks for you to jam along to.

Does anyone know of acoustic guitar lessons online or a dvd?

Do I really need guitar lessons to learn to play anymore?

I’ve decided to learn to play the guitar.. But do I really need lessons? I mean, nowadays, you can learn practically anything you want with a little research on the internet. I’ve got several books and a dvd or two. Will getting lessons be necessary?

    Thanks.

    Need? No.

With enough determination, lots of practice, and an ample amount of patience, it is entirely possible to teach yourself guitar. I did, and I don’t suck.

Before I continue, I’ll admit to having a bias. I can be a cocky SOB when I want to be, and the method I chose to learn guitar is no different. Also, I started very young, while my brain was still figuratively speaking like a dry sponge, ready to absorb anything. I’ve never had a single lesson, and there are certain elements to my style that reveal the fact that I am not a schooled musician. Then again, my heroes are all (for the most part) self taught.

It is by far easier to learn guitar with lessons. Also, there are several "improper" ways of playing that a) can be avoided through lessons, and b) are difficult to change once they become ingrained in your self-taught style. I put the word improper in quotes because of my bias; I feel that sometimes, these are also things that give you flavor, that are marks of uniqueness in a musician.

If you do choose to teach yourself, I highly recommend a poster called "Guitar Chords," available at most music stores and I’ve also seen it at other places in their poster collections. Not only does it look cool on your wall, but it also makes an easy reference, and it’s a good in-your-face reminder to pick up your guitar and practice. Practicing new things often is the key to improving your playing. Also key is to remember that everyone sucks at it for the first little bit, and if you can get over that first hump, the rest is smooth sailing.

So yeah, the key word in your question is "need." Many people don’t need lessons to learn, but it sure can help.

Why does my Guitar not sound like the guys in my guitar lesson DVD?

Posted by admin on December 9th, 2009 and filed under guitar lessons dvd | 4 Comments »

He played an E chord..and I played one..but mine didnt sound anything like the way his was played..yet my guitar is tuned fine…He was just using an amp alhtough his was bigger…Qhy doesnt mine sound like his..his sounded more liek a song..and he said banging out to an E chord is part of the fun of playing guitar..yet I can do that because I dont get the same sound he does..can someone help me.

Electric guitars can sound very different from each other. Some electric guitars sound more bass like while other have a higher treble based sound. Many factors can change the sound of your electric guitar such as strings, type of guitar, amp along with the wood used to make your guitar.

electric vs acoustic guitars the same? Best DVD lessons?

Posted by admin on December 6th, 2009 and filed under guitar lessons dvd | 3 Comments »

In the end, I want to be able to play an electric guitar. However when I look at a preview of all the guitar DVD lessons, they are all played by acoustic guitars. If the teachers play with an acoustic guitar, and i follow along and practice with an electric guitar, will it be the same thing other than the quality of sound? Are they the same coords? Should I buy an acoustic guitar first if im just beginning, and then upgrade to an electric if i get better? Keep in mind i do want to end up playing electric. Also i’m in need of what the best DVD lesson to buy is. So far ive been looking at LearnAndMasterGuitar (http://www.learnandmaster.com/guitar/) and GuitarMasterPro (http://www.guitarmasterpro.net/) only because that guy on youtube that played Canon Rock had it in his link. Is there any others I should look into? Thanks in advance.

There’s no reason you shouldn’t start on electric, if that’s what you want to play. A lot of music purists insist acoustic is the best way to learn, since an acoustic guitar requires more finger strength and dexterity, which makes the transition to electric a breeze. But the thinner necks and lower action (distance between the strings and the fretboard) on electrics make them easier to play, which can be advantageous.

I’ve been playing both acoustic and electric for more than 20 years (mostly electric, since I played in bands), but decided a few months ago that I needed to become a much better guitarist. I found a DVD set at Musician’s Friend that has beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons, as well as a book to accompany each DVD. I’m completely floored by how great it is, since I’ve mostly played by ear. And it’s specific to electric players, so it’s probably perfect for you. The DVDs will teach you everything from how to tune your guitar to how to play complicated leads. Given that the entire set only costs $40, I’m a little embarrassed that I’ve played like such a hack for so long. Here’s a link:

The lessons are geared toward metal players, but it’s ideal for anyone wanting to play guitar. I figure metal guitarists play the most intricate, complicated leads I’ve ever heard, so I can benefit from any knowledge they have, even if I never aspire to be a metal guitarist.

Acoustic and electric guitars are played exactly the same way, so you’ll be able to play either once you’ve learned to play. It will be tougher to switch to acoustic from electric, since you’ll be accustomed to thinner guitar necks. But you’ll probably learn faster on an electric, since it will be easier on the hands. Good luck!
